EVERYDAY SAFETY

Keep children and pets protected

Why secure storage matters, and where to get help after an accidental exposure.

Cannabis products can resemble familiar candy, snacks, or drinks. That creates a risk of accidental exposure, especially for children who cannot recognize the difference. The CDC warns that children who ingest THC can become seriously ill, with symptoms that may include difficulty walking, sitting upright, or breathing.

Keep cannabis products in a locked, childproof container, beyond the sight and reach of children and pets. A familiar-looking wrapper is not a reliable warning to a child, and simply placing a product out of sight is not the same as locking it away.

For questions about an exposure, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 in the United States. Call 911 for an emergency. These contacts provide immediate help; educational articles cannot assess an individual poisoning.
