CANNABINOIDS

What does “delta” mean?

Delta-8, delta-9, and why a hemp label does not establish that a product is non-intoxicating.

Delta-8 THC and delta-9 THC are related cannabinoids. Both can have intoxicating effects. Delta-9 is the compound most commonly associated with the cannabis high; delta-8 occurs naturally in much smaller amounts.

The FDA says concentrated delta-8 is usually manufactured from hemp-derived CBD. This processing can introduce potentially harmful contaminants. The agency has also raised concerns about inconsistent labeling, varying concentrations, and reports of adverse reactions.

The word “hemp” describes a source or product category; it does not establish that a finished product cannot cause intoxication. Likewise, “alternative” is not a scientific safety rating. The FDA has not evaluated or approved delta-8 products for safe use. A product’s presence on a shelf should not be treated as proof of safety or approval.
