THC and CBD, explained
Two well-known cannabis compounds, with different effects and different unanswered questions.
THC and CBD are cannabinoids, compounds found in the cannabis plant. Delta-9 THC is the compound most associated with the cannabis high. CBD is a different compound, and a CBD label is not evidence that a finished product is risk-free.
The FDA warns that CBD can interact with medicines, cause liver injury, and produce drowsiness or digestive side effects. Many questions remain about its long-term effects and product quality.
The FDA has approved one prescription CBD medicine for specific seizure disorders. That approval does not extend to other CBD products or unrelated health claims. Claims that a product treats anxiety, pain, or another condition need evidence and appropriate regulatory approval. A healthcare professional can help explain individual health risks.
Keep asking. Keep checking.
